HOME SLEEP STUDY
- Patient Information
What is a sleep study?
A sleep study is an overnight recording of your sleep for the diagnosis and evaluation of sleep disorders. Sleep studies can be performed in hospital or at home.
What sleep disorders can be diagnosed?
At-home sleep studies can diagnose snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, periodic leg movement disorder and insomnia. The sleep study can also give valuable information to assist in the diagnosis of delayed sleep syndrome and narcolepsy.
What is involved in an At-Home sleep study?
On the night of your study you will need to come into Progressive Dental and we will place the equipment and sensors onto your body. There will be certain things you will need to place before you go to bed, ie, nasal cannula, finger probe and leg sensors. The equipment is worn overnight and the patient takes it off the next morning and brings it back to the practice. The flashcard is then sent to a sleep physician and the results are sent back to your referring practitioner within 7-10 days.
How do I book for a sleep study?
Your referring practitioner can refer you directly to us at Progressive Dental or you can call the surgery to make an appointment.
What do I need to bring to the appointment?
- Medicare card
- List of medications you are currently taking
- Credit card or cash for the security of the equipment and gap payment.
Preparation:
- Wear loose clothing to cover the equipment
- Drive or have someone drive you to our surgery (you will need to go straight home once the equipment has been attached).
- If possible have a shower before coming to the surgery (we realise this may not always be possible)
- Please do not wear makeup, false nails or nail polish.
The sleep study is a record of your night’s sleep. Your routine should remain the same as usual. The only difference is that you will be wearing a sleep monitoring device. You need to take your medications as usual unless otherwise instructed by your referring practitioner. At the end of the study you will remove the equipment and return it to Progressive Dental.
